Why custom

Why a custom store instead of a platform?

Hosted store platforms are good products. A custom store is a different trade-off: you pay once for a store built around your business, then keep your running costs low.

On a hosted platform you rent the store. The subscription keeps it online, and features you need later often come as apps with their own monthly fees. Over three years the running costs can add up to far more than the build. A custom store turns most of that into one upfront price: you pay for hosting and card fees, but nothing to a platform.

You also own what you paid for. The code and your data are yours once the project is paid, so you can host it where you like and ask any developer to extend it. The design isn’t limited to a theme, and the admin is built around how you actually take and fulfil orders, rather than a screen shared by millions of stores.

Melbourne 2026

What an online store costs in Melbourne in 2026

Published ranges from Australian cost guides and platform price lists, checked in October 2026, next to the SIX9 packages. Build quotes vary with catalogue size and features; the monthly running costs are the part most quotes leave out.

Honest trade-offs

When a platform is the better choice

A custom store isn’t right for everyone. These are the cases where we’ll suggest a platform instead, even though we don’t build on one.

A custom SIX9 store suits you if

  • You sell up to a few hundred products from your own website
  • You want low running costs and no monthly platform subscription
  • Your ordering, pickup or delivery rules don’t fit a standard checkout
  • You want to own the code and choose where it’s hosted

A platform may suit you better if

  • You sell thousands of products or across many marketplaces
  • You need a point-of-sale system for a physical shop
  • You want to add new features yourself from an app store, often
  • You’d rather the platform handled hosting and updates for a monthly fee
Every new feature on a custom store is built rather than installed, so it’s quoted before work starts. If you expect to add features every month, weigh that against a platform’s app store.

Included

What every SIX9 store includes

Store Launch already covers everything a small store needs to take its first orders. Growth and Scale build on the same foundation.

  • A custom storefront designed for your products and brand, mobile first
  • Product pages with photos, descriptions, prices and an add-to-cart button
  • Cart and checkout that work on every phone, tablet and desktop
  • Online payments through your own payment account (Stripe or Square; bKash or SSLCommerz in Bangladesh)
  • Your own admin to add products, change prices and manage orders
  • Order confirmation emails for you and your customers
  • Shipping, pickup and returns information pages, using your policy wording
  • HTTPS, with card details handled by the payment provider, never stored on your site
  • Page titles, descriptions and launch checks, including test orders
  • Launch assistance and a walkthrough of your admin

Not included in any package

  • Domain, hosting and payment processing fees
  • Product photography, product descriptions and copywriting
  • Ongoing marketing, advertising and SEO campaigns
  • An app store: new features are built and quoted, not installed

Selling online in Australia

If you’re registered for GST, prices can be shown GST-inclusive and your ABN added to order confirmations, so customers get the details they expect on a tax invoice. Your returns and refunds page should reflect the Australian Consumer Law; you supply the wording and we lay it out clearly and link it from checkout.

Most small Australian stores start with flat-rate shipping, local pickup or a few delivery zones priced from Australia Post or courier rates. Live carrier rates or label printing count as an integration, which Store Scale includes. We’re a Melbourne studio, so you can meet us or work fully online from anywhere in Australia.

Before you start

What we need from you

Having these ready makes the build faster. If something is missing, we’ll tell you in your scope.

  1. Product details
A name, price, photos and a short description for each product, ideally in a spreadsheet. Variants such as sizes and colours, if you have them.
  2. Payment account
A Stripe or Square account in your business name (a bKash merchant or SSLCommerz account in Bangladesh). We connect it; payouts go straight to your bank account.
  3. Shipping and pickup rules
Where you deliver, what it costs and whether customers can collect. Flat rates are the simplest place to start.
  4. Your policies
Returns, refunds, shipping times and privacy, in your own words. We add them as pages and link them from the checkout.
  5. Brand assets
Your logo, colours and any photos of your products or space. No brand yet? Brand Launch designs one.
  6. Domain and hosting
The domain you want to use. We recommend hosting that suits your store and list its cost in your quote.

How much does an ecommerce website cost with SIX9?

There are three fixed-price packages, paid once: Store Launch is A$279 for up to 10 products, Store Growth is A$549 for up to 30 products with variants, discounts and customer accounts, and Store Scale is A$849 for up to 50 products with bulk import, staff roles, reports and one integration. Your domain, hosting and card processing fees are separate running costs.

How much does an online store cost in Melbourne?

In October 2026, Australian cost guides put a theme-based Shopify store at about A$2,000–8,000 to build plus A$56 a month for the Basic plan, a standard WooCommerce store at about A$3,000–10,000 plus hosting, and custom agency builds from about A$10,000. A SIX9 custom store is A$279, A$549 or A$849 paid once, with no platform fee; you pay hosting, a domain and your card provider’s fees. The Melbourne cost table on this page lists the sources.

Do you build online stores for Melbourne businesses?

Yes. SIX9 Design is a Melbourne studio and builds online stores for small businesses in Melbourne and across Australia, including makers, cafés and local retailers. Everything runs online, and you can meet us in person if you prefer. Prices are in Australian dollars, with GST and shipping planned into the store from the start.

Is a custom store cheaper than Shopify over a few years?

Shopify and similar platforms charge a monthly plan, and often paid apps and transaction fees on top, so the cost keeps running. A SIX9 store is a one-off fixed price, with only hosting, your domain and card processing fees afterwards. Which works out cheaper depends on your catalogue and sales, so we compare both with your numbers in the free review; see our monthly versus one-off comparison for the method.

Do you build on Shopify or WooCommerce?

No. We design and code every store ourselves, with its own admin for products and orders. There is no store platform underneath, so there is no monthly platform subscription and the design is not limited by a theme.

Are there any monthly fees?

Not to SIX9 or a store platform. Your store needs hosting and a domain, and your payment provider charges its card processing fees on each sale. We list these running costs in your quote so you know them before you start.

How do payments work, and is it secure?

Customers pay through your own payment account (Stripe or Square; bKash or SSLCommerz in Bangladesh), and the money is paid out to your bank by the provider. Card details are entered on the provider’s secure checkout, so they are never stored on your website, and the whole site runs over HTTPS.

Can I add and edit products myself?

Yes. Every package includes a custom admin where you add products, change prices and photos, and see and update orders. Store Growth adds stock levels and discount codes; Store Scale adds staff logins, reports and CSV import.

What if I have more products than my package includes?

The product count is how many products we add for you before launch. You can add as many more as you like in your admin afterwards. If you want us to load a larger catalogue, tell us in your brief and we’ll include it in your scope.

Can you move my store from Shopify, Wix or WooCommerce?

Usually, yes. Most platforms export products as a CSV file, and Store Scale includes bulk import. We keep your important URLs with redirects where we can. Customer passwords can’t be moved between systems, so returning customers set a new one.

When is a platform like Shopify the better choice?

If you sell hundreds or thousands of products, sell across many marketplaces and social channels, need a point-of-sale system in a shop, or want to install new features yourself every week, a platform is often the better fit. We’ll tell you honestly after your free review.

Who owns the store once it’s built?

Once the project is fully paid, the store built for you and its data are yours, subject to third-party licences. You can host it where you like and ask any developer to work on it.

How long does a store take?

It depends on the size of your catalogue and how quickly your products, photos and payment account are ready. We confirm a timeline with your scope before work starts, and Store Launch projects are the quickest.

Do I pay when I choose a package?

No. Choosing a package opens a short brief. No payment is taken; we confirm the scope, total and timing before any work starts.

Which currency are prices in?

All package prices are listed in Australian dollars (AUD). We take on clients anywhere in Australia, the United States and Canada.
